The love of an old dog.

In a crowded waiting room
at the local vets
an elderly man
slumps in his chair.
His left foot is held out carefully
at just the right angle
to provide rest
for a tired nose.

His chocolate labrador
grey muzzled, cloudy eyed,
lies watchfully,
his head at peace.
He is safe here.
They cling to the knowledge
of each other’s presence
as they wait for the call.

He will miss that weight on his foot
when it is no longer there.
