Waterson-Carthy. SJT Scarborough. 3-11-08

This was a low key informal evening with three musicians who were relaxed and enjoying themselves. I had never heard Mike Waterson sing live and it was a real treat. He has a charming ease and a sly humour when he sings his own songs, and when you add in real emotion about the death of the Hull fishing industry you get something quite special. Some great guitar playing from Martin Carthy, as you’d expect. It’s fascinating to watch the effort he puts into getting a true sound and perfect harmonics. Norma Waterson was in great voice, and the simple stripped down style, either acapella or with only Martin Carthy on guitar, allowed it to shine. Loved The White Cockade as an encore.
