There is indeed. My grandfather was one of the relatively lucky ones. He was physically strong from working with horses, doing a job with horses that he knew, and mentally tough as well. He always said he felt lucky not to have to go in the trenches as the big guns were constantly on the move behind the lines.

My granddad was with the East Lancashire Regiment at the Battle of the Somme. He was lucky enough to escape with his life but half his hand missing. Invalided home he was awarded the Silver War Badge. As far as I can gather he, like so many, are not mentioned on Rolls of Honor or War Memorials because they survived. There is, I think, a terrible irony in that.
